Periodontal disease — also known as gum disease — is a chronic infection that can cause catastrophic bone loss, resulting in unstable teeth and, ultimately, lost teeth due to periodontal ligament damage. Here at the practice of Scott A. Gradwell, D.M.D., F.A.G.D, P.C., we specialize in helping our patients restore their periodontal health through expert care. Since 1990, our practice has been a trusted name for compassionate, modern gum disease treatments and dental implant procedures, prioritizing the prevention of periodontal disease. Based in Allentown, PA, we serve patients seeking periodontal disease solutions from across the Lehigh Valley.

Periodontic Options & Treatments

Gum Disease Treatment

These professional cleanings target the buildup of plaque and bacteria, preventing inflammation and gingival conditions that affect oral health. This involves professional cleaning techniques, executed by our periodontist specialists, to ensure thorough removal of bacterial deposits. Up to 80% of American adults have some form of gum disease, which can severely affect oral health. This begins when bacterial plaque builds up below the gum line, releases toxins, and eventually turns rock-hard, causing teeth to separate from the gums, affecting stability. This bacterial accumulation is particularly concerning as it can lead to serious issues like gingival inflammation. If you have gum disease, you may notice symptoms ranging from mild to severe. For many patients, their symptoms are so minor they do not realize there is a problem until the periodontal disease has progressed to an advanced stage. Symptoms such as chronic bad breath, bleeding gums, sore gums, pockets between teeth, loose teeth, and changes in the way teeth fit together can significantly affect oral health. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis, and more, showing how it can affect overall health. In fact, studies show that patients with gum disease are twice as likely to have heart disease.

Laser Gum Therapy

Led by our periodontist, laser gum therapy improves oral health by precisely targeting infection, treating periodontal conditions effectively. During the procedure, the periodontist will use a dental laser to decontaminate and reduce gingival pockets, which can hold potentially life-threatening bacteria. During the procedure, we will use a dental laser to decontaminate and reduce gum pockets, which can hold potentially life-threatening bacteria. When left untreated, periodontal disease can increase the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke, emphasizing the need for timely intervention. Laser dentistry procedures are virtually pain-free, require less anesthesia, and result in minimal gingival bleeding.

Free-Gingival Gum Grafting

Our periodontist provides gum grafts to treat gum recession effectively. If your gums have receded, it can expose the tooth roots, causing sensitivity and increasing the need for periodontal treatment. During the grafting procedure, the exposed tooth root is covered, which alleviates tooth sensitivity and improves aesthetics. We provide gum grafts to treat gum recession. If your gums have receded, it can expose the tooth roots, increase sensitivity, and put you at a higher risk for periodontal disease and decay. During the grafting procedure, the exposed tooth root is covered, which alleviates tooth sensitivity and improves aesthetics. Gingival grafting effectively addresses root exposure, a common concern in periodontal disease.

Tissue Gum Grafting

Through collaboration with a periodontist, gingival tissue treatment enhances lasting results.

Alternative to Soft Tissue Grafting

Effective maintenance involves regular checkups with your periodontist and general dentist to prevent any potential gum issues. Regular appointments with your dentist are crucial for maintaining oral health and ensuring efficient diagnosis of any gum conditions.

Fibro-Gide

Geistlich Fibro-Gide® is a collagen matrix alternative to soft gingival tissue grafting specifically designed for palate-free soft tissue regeneration.

Cytoplast MicroDerm is employed in various dental surgeries to aid in periodontal regeneration, supporting gingival and bone tissue recovery.

Perioderm Gum Grafting

This is a type of gum grafting procedure in which the gum grafts are not taken from your own palate but from a donor. It is used to treat gum recession and is a successful option for many patients.

Extractions

As with all of our procedures, the periodontist will partner with you before, during, and after your dental extraction to make sure you are comfortable with your treatment options. We perform this procedure to treat a variety of dental conditions, including advanced periodontal disease, misaligned wisdom teeth, and more. This straightforward and simple procedure also benefits patients who have broken, cracked, and/or excessively decayed or damaged teeth. We will work with you to determine if tooth extractions are right for you, as well as discuss tooth replacement options, including dental implants or mini dental implants. Including the careful examination by a periodontist ensures optimal oral health outcomes.

Bone Growth and Supportive Procedures

BioXclude

BioXclude® is a minimally manipulated dehydrated human de-epithelialized amnion-chorion membrane serving as a barrier, conduit, connector, or cushion in a variety of dental and periodontal regenerative procedures.

Growth-factor enhanced matrix (GEM) is indicated to treat the following periodontally related defects: intrabony periodontal defects, furcation periodontal defects, and gingival recession associated with periodontal defects. This growth-factor-enhanced matrix combines a bioactive protein – highly purified rhPDGF-BB – with an osteoconductive matrix, ß-TCP. GEM 21S® is the only dental therapy containing rhPDGF-BB, one of the main growth factors found in the human body, known for its stimulatory role in periodontal ligament maintenance.

Aesthetic Gum Surgery

This surgical approach, often guided by a periodontist, enhances overall appearance. This type of procedure is used to surgically remove excess gingival tissue, supporting a brighter smile. Gum recontouring is a good treatment option for patients with a “gummy smile” — meaning too much gum tissue shows when they smile.

Crown Lengthening

We perform this surgery to recontour the gingival tissue around a tooth, ensuring space for restorative or cosmetic Dentistry treatments. It is used as part of a crown replacement treatment providing space between the supporting bone and crown. This also prevents the crown from damaging the bone and gum tissue.

Lichen Planus

Lichen Planus is an autoimmune disease of the skin or the mucosal membrane of the mouth. It is one of the most common dermatologic diseases of the mouth. Lichen Planus appears as very fine grayish-white lines on the gums and cheeks of patients, usually on both sides of the mouth. It can occur in other areas of the body but is generally confined to oral areas.

Lichen Planus is not curable, but it can be treated, often requiring the expertise of a specialized periodontist. We start with a conservative treatment of warm salt-water rinses, then move to a special mouth rinse called “Magic Mouth Rinse,” which contains several ingredients compounded by a pharmacist. The patient rinses with this solution three times a day. The goals of treatment are to keep patients comfortable and to prevent Erosive Lichen Planus. Erosive Lichen Planus is a more aggressive form of Lichen Planus. It causes the skin of the mouth to fall off (sloughing of the skin), which is painful and makes eating difficult for patients. Many times, steroids are used for a short time to get the disease in check. If you have these symptoms and need advice, make an appointment by contacting our office for a consultation.
