In Septembers issue of Lehigh Valley Style magazine, highly regarded dentists in the area were nominated for Select Dentists. Dr. Scott Gradwell is being honored as one of the Select Dentists. His patient experience, years in practice and use of new technology all aided him in being recognized as a Select Dentist in the field of Periodontics. We congratulate him on making the list!
 

 

This week, Dr. Scott Gradwell and his staff celebrated Christmas in July. We thanked all of our referring dentist’s who send their wonderful patients our way by sending them “cool” treats. Ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cones were delivered to the offices by King Kone’s very own Santa!

Dr. Gradwell had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Honduras in May 2016. He was part of a medical mission team from the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown that travelled to Manos Amigo medical clinic in La Entrada Honduras.

Dr. Gradwell performed 80 surgeries in one week and assisted the medical team with conscious sedation cases when necessary. The medical team provided incredible wound care to advance soft tissue destruction due to diabetes and long term puncture wounds. Dr. Lee Sanders, a podiatrist that joined our team, was a past President of the American Diabetes Association. He was able to provide clinical skills as well as taught the Physicians at Manos Amigos and a patient information afternoon translated into spanish.
Dr. Gradwell had the opportunity to teach the attending Dentists at Manos Amigo surgical protocols for extractions and periodontal surgery. It was the principle that if you teach you will achieve a lot more results that just doing it yourself.  Dr. Gradwell has a passion for teaching and has been teaching at Lehigh Valley Hospital for 25 years which is one of the proudest accomplishments in his life. So this mission trip had both clinical treatment and educational teaching which made it unique from his two other mission trips.
Dr. Gradwell has noticed was an incredible experience helping the people of Honduras really is. They are so humble and thankful for everything the medical team was able to do for them and in turn, their long days become rewarding ones.

Dr. Gradwell’s goal is to join the mission trip to Malawi Africa next year with Villages in Partnership and then 2018, return to Honduras with the FPCA medical team.
He would like to thank everyone who has helped him with either financial or spiritual support. Your prayers were appreciated and were felt in Honduras.

On Thursday November 5^th, Dr. Scott Gradwell was inducted into the American College of Dentists. He was nominated by two fellow dentists and selected by the Board of Regents of the American College of Dentists. This foundation was created in 1920 to recognize dentists with superior professionalism, ethics, exceptional leadership, achievements and involvements in the dental profession and in the community. The Convocation ceremony was an exciting time for Dr. Gradwell as he was honored by this prestigious award.
      


 

Many people suffer from dental anxiety and/or dental phobia. Most of this is due to poor dental experiences as a child. People over the age of 40 are mostly effected by this because they did not have the benefit of local anesthesia as a child that is prevalent today. As a result, they may have suffered through dental procedures, making them too nervous to have any additional treatment done now.
My staff and I provide extra special care in dealing with patients who have dental anxiety and dental phobic patients. We pride ourselves in providing as much comfort to patients as we can throughout their entire dental experience. One way in which we do this is through oral sedation. We can prescribe an anti-anxiety pill for the patient to take the day before and the day of the treatment. Another way that we provide comfort in a more advanced way is through intravenous conscious sedation.

According to the standards of the State of Pennsylvania, a patient is monitored appropriately by a dental assistant and myself. Medications such as Versed and Fentanyl are utilized for light conscious sedation through an IV in the arm. I have been providing sedation in my office for 17 years now.

Dr. Gradwell hosted an anniversary party for his barn on his property of Dutton Mill Farm in Fogelsville, Pa. The barn was built by Henry and Mary Rupp in 1915 and celebrated its 100th anniversary on July 10, 2015. Along with a crowd of 150 people there was entertainment, a delicious barbeque spread by Mr. Barbeque 911 and a wonderful firework display by Dr. S. John Salivonchik. Dr. Salivonchik provided the fireworks under his trade name, ” Fireworks by Dr. Serge.”
One of the unknown tidbits about Dr. Gradwell is that he enjoys pyrotechnics with one of his best friends, Dr. Salivonchik, and they have a yearly display on July 4th. Occasionally will be found at special venues such as the one at Dutton Mill Farm on July 10, 2015.

 On Monday April 27^th, Dr. Gradwell and his staff along with Dr. Bob Dashbach and his staff attended an Iron Pigs game together. We enjoyed wonderful food and association with our family and fellow coworkers as we cheered on the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Dr. Dashbach had the privilege of throwing out one of the first pitches and he did awesome!


Being at the baseball game together was a good opportunity to mingle with those we knew well but also to get to know some of the other staff members of the other office. Dr. Gradwell and his staff enjoy networking with other dental offices as a way to stay close with other doctors. It was a good night to enjoy ourselves and hang out with the team’s mascot… Ferris!

I want to share with you an amazing technology  that we recently have added to our office. It is called the DEKA CO2 Laser.

It has virtually eliminated the need for scalpel surgery in our office.  The treatment of periodontal disease using the laser is called, Laser-Assisted Minimally Invasive Periodontal Therapy.   It allows us to do periodontal (gum) treatments such as Scaling & Root Planing, Frenectomies, Laser Assisted New Attachment, assist in Soft Tissue Grafting surgery, Biopsies of soft tissue, Gingivectomies to correct a gummy smile, and removal of Pre-Cancerous lesions in the mouth. The Deka Smart Laser was a big investment to our office but it allows us to deliver the most advanced care to our patients.
