Operation Christmas Child
Our office staff put together a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child. A little boy in another country will be receiving our box. We are hoping this makes his Christmas extra special!
Today we were notified via email that the Christmas box our office staff put together for a special little boy is on its way to Namibia, Africa. Also, the Christmas box that Heather and her family put together for a special little girl is being sent to the Ukraine. Together, we helped to make their holiday a little more brighter and put a big smile on their face.
Maliya was very excited to fill her box to make a less fortunate child feel loved.
LV Phantoms vs. Hershey Bears
On Wednesday, November 19th, Dr. Gradwell hosted a wonderful evening at the PPL Center. Some of his staff as well as some great local dentists attended the Lehigh Valley Phantoms vs. Hershey Bears hockey game. Not only did the Phantoms win…..they won in overtime and a shootout! It was a wonderful environment to interact with local dentists and enjoy a relaxing evening. It was Dr. Gradwell’s way of showing his appreciation to his referring doctors. The evening had a wonderful turnout and a great time was had by all! Dr. Gradwell is looking forward to cheering the Phantoms on to many more wins!!

Agri-Plex at the Fairgrounds

On Saturday September 13, 2014, Dr. Gradwell and his entire staff volunteered their time and services to help people have a better smile. We arrived bright and early at the Agri-Plex in Allentown, PA for the Missions of Mercy Dental Clinic. This was a 2-day event that helped thousands of people in need of Extractions, Cleanings, Restorative Dentistry, Root Canals and Pediatric Dentistry. People were grateful and appreciative of our willingness to help them. We all agree that this was a humbling experience to be a part of, to see so many people in need of extreme dental care and we were able to help. Hopefully next year will be an even bigger success for MOM-N-PA. Enjoy these pictures that we took throughout the day!

My Trip to Africa!
I traveled to Malawi, Africa from July 19th to August 1st for a Dental Mission Trip. Alongside me were my daughter Lauren, and friends of mine from here. During this trip I was able to experience the vast culture of the Malawians as well as perform many surgeries that changed people’s lives. Throughout that process my life was changed as well.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to my Malawi Africa Trip through financial donations and prayer. The 10 days were a very humbling experience in which I performed 200 surgeries with a Malawian dental technician who extracts teeth in the villages. We did not have access to a dental chair or even electricity, so we used a plastic patio chair and a headlamp from Cabela’s as our dental operatory. The medical team as a whole saw 1,971 patients which included home visits when necessary. The Malawian people are peaceful and thankful for what little they have and they were thankful for the attention and care that we provided throughout our trip. Those who made contributions, whatever they were, made it possible for us to have medications and supplies necessary to make this opportunity happen.
One of the many blessings I had was to work with Wellington, a dental technician who extracted teeth with me. He is a 27 year old man with a wife and an 8 month old daughter. He was accepted into the Dental School Program in Tanzania and would love to go but has no financial means to get there. After prayerful consideration, Eileen and I have decided to commit to paying for his schooling for the next four years. Wellington, as well as the African trip in general, made that much of an impact on our lives. We ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers as the Lord continues to call us and work through us as only He can do. Here are some pictures for your enjoyment. Thank you all for your generosity, prayers, thoughts and words, it was greatly appreciated!

Dirty Dash 2014
Dirty Dash Mud Run June 2014

On June 7th, Dr. Gradwell along with some of our staff got down right dirty! We entered and accomplished the Dirty Dash Mud Run held in Pottstown, Pa. It was an obstacle course set up at Camp Quebec that challenged our perseverance, questioned our abilities, yet strengthened our team bond. The Dirty Dash mud run puts you to the ultimate test by engaging in some of the toughest military boot camp techniques while also bringing out the inner child in you by simply…Getting Dirty! The dirty dashers said it perfectly when they said that you will, “…need endurance to trudge up mountains of sludge, courage to overcome uncompromising obstacles, a complete lack of shame to wallow in pits of mud and a smile to show through at the end.” Well, with complete confidence we can say that we did all four, and we are proud of it! Enjoy these muddy and fun-filled pictures that were perfectly captured throughout the race.

Emdogain

Emdogain is used for successful recession coverage. A 2003 abstract by McGuire and Nunn in The Journal of Periodontology, evaluated human recession treated with connective tissue grafts and coronally positioned flap versus Emdogain and coronally positioned flaps. The results showed that in 17 patients, when compared to connective tissue grafts, 95% of the Emdogain patients achieved the same clinical result.

The nice advantage about this procedure for the patient is that we do not have to harvest tissue from the palate. Emdogain is an enamel matrix protein derivative from porcine tooth buds. The material is user friendly and cost effective, if used to repair several teeth. When considering having root coverage recession corrective surgery, consider the option of Emdogain.

Muco-gingival Surgery
One of the many procedures that Dr. Gradwell performs is the corrective surgery for a “gummy smile”. The procedure is called Muco/gingival Surgery. You know that look, someone who has nice teeth but the teeth look really short when they smile. Their gums also look like they have no scalloped shape to them and their smile doesn’t look nice but their teeth are usually straight. Below is the ‘before’ photo of a patient that had a “gummy smile”.
Within the short amount of time it took to do the surgery, we transformed her smile and her life! She was extremely happy with the outcome and is very excited for her new gorgeous smile!

Medical Emergency Course
Scott Gradwell, DMD hosted a complimentary continuing education course for Dentists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants and Administrative Staff, on March 27, 2014 at the Best Western in Bethlehem, Pa.
150 people attended the lecture which was presented by John Brewer, a Paramedic.
His lecture was entitled “Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office” and focused on medical treatment protocols and how to treat many types of medical emergencies. Syncope, or fainting, is the number 1 dental office medical emergency. The evening allowed us the opportunity to learn valuable hands on techniques to keep patients safe in our offices.

NEW! VaTech Cone Beam Machine
In our ongoing effort to provide the best quality of care to our patients, we now provide x-rays with our new VaTech Green CT 2-D and 3-D imaging system. This machine is the only one in the Lehigh Valley area with the lowest dosage of radiation in the world. We now have the ability to take panoramic x-rays as well as 3D Cone Beam images. Full mouth and Bitewing x-rays are done in one scan versus multiple x-rays in and out of the mouth saving time and eliminating patient discomfort. Who wouldn’t like instant gratification?
According to pubmed.gov author S.C. White states, “Cone-beam imaging has gained broad acceptance in dentistry in the last five years. Cone-beam machines emit an x-ray beam shaped like a cone rather than a fan as in conventional computed tomography (CT) machines.” The author goes on to say “The beam diameter ranges from 4-30cm….in one pass around the patients’ head capturing from 160-599 basic images. 3-D images of bone surfaces can also be generated”.
We specialize in the placement of dental implants and the treatment of periodontal disease which includes the evaluation of fractured teeth, bone loss, infections and cysts. The Cone Beam image will greatly improve our ability to detect these unfavorable conditions and allow us to better treat our patients. The best aspect of this machine is its’ minimal to no radiation to our patients. We have spent countless hours in training to better equip ourselves with this new machine. At first glance this machine may seem intimidating but we assure you it is very quick and painless! The Green CT has benefited the dental field in diagnosing what a normal x-ray may not capture.
